Tips to Curb Summertime Teen Laziness

Most of us enjoy a lazy day when we can sleep in, putz around and just relax a little – and our kids are no different. However, when the dog days of summer come, some teens take that one “couch out” day and stretch it over an entire summer break. Here are some tips to combat summertime teen laziness and keep your teen active and engaged.

Communicate Expectations – Tell your teen in a nonthreatening but firm manner that you will not accept their staying in bed all morning and afternoon. It is perfectly reasonable to ask that they get up at a decent hour. Explain that you want them to do more than merely watch TV, play video games, or visit social networking sites all day.

If your teen wants you to help pay for their summer activities, they should be willing to abide by a few summer guidelines. Set an age appropriate, specific time that you expect them to be home, based upon the level of trust they have earned. Ask them to take on a couple of extra chores during the summer to earn some pocket money. These chores could be for you or someone else, but make sure they go above and beyond the normal, everyday chores that every member of the family should be expected to do.

Get Them Engaged – Whether you ask them to help you more around the house, participate in volunteer activities in the community, or help them get a job, you want them to be engaged in something worthwhile. Give them encouragement to help at a YMCA, children’s program, or nursing home. They may find they truly enjoy these volunteer activities and you will help them appreciate the joys of serving others that will last a lifetime.

Help them find volunteer positions by calling around to local places of worship, daycares, charities, or nursing homes. Local businesses may be hiring summer help; offer to help them find a job to earn some extra money. This will help them learn to manage money, but will also help them realize the value of their time. If they get paid by the hour, they might be less likely to fritter their time away.

Spend Family Time – Avoid giving lectures about what they should do during the summer. (Lectures, period, are ineffective with teens.) Instead, find activities that you can do with them. You don’t have to spend every waking moment with your teen, but take some time to take them shopping, go to a movie, or out for a coffee. Keep it relaxed and let your teen open up to you in their own time and way. Summertime is a great time to reconnect with your teen. Don’t let these weeks go by without taking this time to slow down and just be together.

Encourage Physical Activity – Take time to learn or play a new sport with your teen. Not only will this help your teen be more active during the summer, it’ll help you get some much needed exercise, too. Boys in particular are more likely to enjoy “side by side” activities. These are often great times to open dialogue with your son about important issues. Give tennis, swimming, cycling, or rollerblading a try. You both will benefit your health and well being.

Parents all over the country complain that their teens get lazy during the summer break. But teens, just like toddlers, need guidance, clear communication, and reminders of your expectations in order to be successful. These tips should get you well on your way. Ask your teen if there are things they’d like to accomplish before school starts, and then help them to meet those goals.

Everyone knows it is essential to remain fit and healthy throughout our lives. It is important to keep a healthy, balanced diet and to keep up a course of regular exercise to avoid susceptibility to illness and disease and to keep our bodies happy. This is never truer than during our teenage years, where it is important to maintain a healthy body for a variety of reasons.


The teenage body is growing at developing at its quickest rate, covering the transition to adulthood. Furthermore, the impact of increasing hormonal activity and intellectual development make the teenage years a difficult time for both parents and the kids themselves. To fuel all this growth and development, it is essential to provide a healthy diet for your kids. The usual things: eight glasses of water, five portions of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and vitamin supplements are obviously a good idea, although it is also important to ensure a suitable health/happiness balance. The teenage mind is sensitive and perceives situations in ways which many adults forget. To avoid drastic conflict with your teenager, it is important to ensure a careful approach to healthy dieting, to minimise the risk of contempt and counter productive arguments.


To keep your teenager healthy you should never hinder social development. Allow your child to go out with friends and to start enjoying their youth. This is far better than keeping your kids inside to avoid dangers and temptations. The latter in most cases will almost certainly lead to social retardation and a life as an outcast. The teenage years are the most important to keep your child mentally stimulated, and another part of this is accepting opinions and moods. Don’t rubbish your child’s opinions, be they political or about life in general, but do take the point of challenging what they say. Encouraging processed, logical thought is the best way to improve your child’s overall intelligence beyond their primary years.


Encouraging exercise should certainly be high on the agenda for any parent of teenagers. Exercise can be great for boosting self confidence as well as improving fitness, and this can help with the muscular development of your child. Stress the importance to your child but don’t nag, because at the end of the day that won’t solve anyone’s problems.


All in all, it’s a case of being careful, and allowing your child’s autonomy to develop their personality and mental capacity. Other than that, maintaining a fairly healthy diet is the key to your child’s effective development.

Fitness Tips For Teens

Most teens, unfortunately, know nothing about teen health and teen fitness, and it shows in gyms across the country. Teens are showing up to the gym to workout, but we will not address the issues of teen health and teen fitness until we alter their workouts.

Here are quick tips to improve teen fitness, teen health and college fitness:

1- Rest less and workout more. It’s tough for teens to lose weight while they are resting five mintues between sets. You need to get up and workout more. Do a set of jumping jacks between sets, it’ll work! That’ll help out teen health and college health.

2- Lift weights to lose weight. Teen health is terrible because they, especially females, waste their time on the treadmills and elliptical. College health would greatly improve with shorter workouts with lifting more weights, and teen fitness wouldn’t be such an issue if teens lifted.

3- When doing cardio, do it right. Long distance running or walking will not improve teem health. In fact, there have been studies done to prove that adding aerobic training to a workout showed nothing that dieting alone wouldn’t help. Do a short run (less than a minute) followed by a shorter walk. That’ll greatly help teen fitness and college health. It’ll help lose weight!

4- Don’t isolate muscles. Teen health, teen fitness and college health will not improve unless they learn to workout right. Bicep curls will not improve teen health and teen fitness. Neither will triceps kickbacks or sit ups help out college health.

5- For college health, try to stay active. Easier said than done, but college health is just as big of a concern as teen health and teen fitness. Stay active. Go to the gym more. Remember, if you were an athlete last year, and now you do nothing, your college health will deteriorate.

Start small.

Nobody expects you to run 10 miles or bench-press 200lbs on your first day. You need to work up to these things. In fact, if you do too much too quickly you’re likely to either burn out or seriously injure yourself. Walking is good.

Do both cardio and weights.

Many teens do one or the other, but for faster results, you should do both cardio and weight training. Don’t worry girls…you won’t bulk up like a body builder. You will simply be healthy and strong.

Muscles need time to repair.

You should not exercise the same group of muscles two days in a row…this includes abs! Your muscles need time to repair and grow stronger. Give them a break.

Start with breakfast

Too many kids are starting their day by skipping breakfast. It has been proven that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Challenge your teens to start their day off right by eating a healthy, filling breakfast.

Drink lots of water

Your teen’s body needs at least 6 cups of water per day. Instead of buying canned sodas or other sweetened drinks, buy bottled water and try to encourage them to drink it.

Get physical

Again, technology has become an ingrained part of children’s lives. Encourage your teen to get off the couch and get moving. Any form of exercise is better than none. Remember, it doesn’t have to be strenuous to count as exercise.

No more Prepackaged snacks

Popular snacks are loaded with sugar, carbohydrates, fat, and salt. Instead of providing your teen with these sweet and salty snacks, give them healthy alternatives of fresh fruit and vegetables.

In fact, due the fact that most teens are overweight because of bad diets and little to no exercise. If they fix there diet and do any sort of aerobic exercise they will begin to rapidly to lose weight. The key for teen weight loss therefore is self motivation.

If you tend to eat a lot of junk, it is a good idea to cut back and what better motivation to get healthy than the prospect of finally getting rid of your man boobs. Try to eat healthier food, such as fruits and vegetables. Avoid dishes that are rich in fat and calories since they promote deposition of fat in various areas of your body, including your breasts.

Most teens might not have the money to join a fitness club but what you can do is take part in activities that happen in school. This will give you at least enough opportunity to exercise each part of the body. Sports come in various choices when it comes to activities; i.e., soccer, softball, tennis, athletics and more.

Teens are in a period of their life where they are experiencing constant natural changes in their bodies. You can’t just tell a teen to eat less and expect them to lose weight healthily. They need a well balanced diet which makes it very difficult for them to lose any weight with most dieting plans.

Eat Slowly And Calmly

Everyone loves to eat but eating fast is not the proper way of eating the Digestive system will not tell your brain that you have eaten enough. Eating slowly helps your body digestion of food.

Healthy foods can also be prepared ahead of time and frozen for later use. You can prepare your own frozen foods, but make sure that you don’t load with artificial additives and preservatives. And involving your children in the preparation of healthy foods can create a time when each other can share about their day. Eating healthy foods do not have to cost you time or money, and they are so much better for you.

Exercise also benefits you mentally. When you’re fit, it affects the way you feel. You have a lot more energy, and you sleep better at night. You can concentrate better so your memory improves and because of that you feel more confident in school. Fitness gives you a real sense of accomplishment and being in control. After all, nobody can get fit for you.
